Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River
Lewis Smith Lake map
Lewis Smith Lake is an Alabama Power reservoir on the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says the lake was created in 1961 and straddles Cullman, Walker, and Winston counties. The earth-and-rockfill dam was dedicated on May 23, 1961, and named for Alabama Power president Lewis M. Smith. The shop that sells these maps is in Hanceville, in Cullman County.
The dam at the upper Warrior
Alabama Power’s shoreline guide lists 21,200 acres, 642 miles of shoreline, and a full pool of 510 feet, in those same three counties. The company’s hydro page lists a maximum depth at the dam of 264 feet. The encyclopedia describes the dam as 2,200 feet long and 300 feet tall. Smith is a storage lake. Alabama Power’s flood-operations note names Cordova as this reservoir’s control point. Building Smith also made powerhouses practical at the Corps’ Bankhead and Holt dams downstream: the Corps owns those locks, and Alabama Power generates there.
Who a Smith Lake map is for
A Smith Lake map is for a house on the Cullman, Walker, or Winston shoreline, for someone who fishes the Sipsey Fork arms, or for a wedding or housewarming when this is the lake in the story. Search “Lewis Smith Lake, Alabama” and pick the Cullman County reservoir. A plain “Smith Lake” search is a different, smaller lake. Bankhead Lake and Holt Lake are separate Corps pools on the Black Warrior closer to Tuscaloosa, and the City of Tuscaloosa’s drinking-water lake on the North River is a third map.
