Black Warrior River
Bankhead Lake map
Bankhead Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Black Warrior River. Alabama Power’s shoreline guide marks it as a USACE-owned reservoir of 9,200 acres at a pool of 255 feet, in Walker, Jefferson, and Tuscaloosa counties. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management describes it as about 15 miles west of Birmingham and 30 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa.
Corps lock, Alabama Power powerhouse
The Encyclopedia of Alabama’s account of Lewis Smith Lake says the Corps owns Bankhead Lock and Dam and Holt Lock and Dam, while Alabama Power operates powerhouses at both. Generation at Bankhead began on July 12, 1963. Holt Lake is the next pool downstream, from Holt Dam upstream to Bankhead Dam, north of the city of Tuscaloosa. Smith Lake is farther upstream on the Sipsey Fork and is an Alabama Power storage lake, not this navigation pool.
