Lake Tuscaloosa map
Lake Tuscaloosa is the City of Tuscaloosa’s drinking-water reservoir on the North River, in Tuscaloosa County. The city’s lakes page says it was completed in 1970, covers 5,885 acres, and holds 40 billion gallons. ADEM places it about five miles north of Tuscaloosa and Northport. It is not a hydroelectric or navigation lake.
Built because the older city lakes ran short
The Tuscaloosa News account of the water system says the city dammed the Little Yellow River in 1929 to create Harris Lake, added Lake Nicol in 1945, and still ran short by the 1960s. The North River dam that created Lake Tuscaloosa followed. That earlier Harris Lake is not R.L. Harris Lake on the Tallapoosa, which people also call Lake Wedowee. Holt Lake, beside the city, is the Corps pool on the Black Warrior and does not supply this drinking water.
