Tallapoosa River
Lake Martin map
Lake Martin is an Alabama Power reservoir on the Tallapoosa River at Cherokee Bluffs, where the river is the line between Tallapoosa and Elmore counties. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says the dam gates closed in 1926, the dam was named for company president Thomas Wesley Martin, and the lake did not fill completely until heavy rain on April 23, 1928. The official dedication came in 1936.
Cherokee Bluffs
Alabama Power’s shoreline guide lists 41,150 acres, 880 miles of shoreline, and a full pool of 491 feet, in Coosa, Elmore, and Tallapoosa counties. The company classes Martin as a storage lake. Before the pool came up, the company cleared the communities of Susanna and Benson. Yates Lake, a 2,000-acre run-of-river pool at Tallassee, is the next dam downstream. Logan Martin Lake, on the Coosa near Vincent, was named for Thomas Martin’s brother and is a different map.
Who a Lake Martin map is for
This is the map for a house on the Tallapoosa pool above Yates Dam: Coosa County, the Elmore County side, or the Tallapoosa County side. It fits a housewarming or a wedding when the couple’s place is on this shore. The gift is a map of the lake you select, not a photo of a particular house, unless you add your own line of text on the product. Search “Lake Martin, Alabama,” not “Logan Martin.”
