Tennessee River

Wilson Lake map

Wilson Lake is the Tennessee River pool held by Wilson Dam at Muscle Shoals. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the dam from 1918 to 1925, between Florence and Muscle Shoals. TVA acquired it in 1933. The National Park Service lists Wilson Dam as a National Historic Landmark, designated on November 13, 1966.

A dam with a landmark designation

The National Register nomination describes Wilson Dam as a concrete structure spanning the Tennessee between Florence on the north bank and Muscle Shoals on the south. It gives the reservoir a maximum width of 1.6 miles and a main shoreline of 154 miles. TVA’s hydroelectric page calls Wilson its largest hydro plant, rated at 663 megawatts, and says Wilson, Wheeler, and Pickwick together cover the Muscle Shoals that once stopped river traffic. The lake on a Wilson map is the pool above this dam, upstream toward Wheeler Dam, not the Pickwick pool below it.

Who a Wilson map is for

A Wilson map fits a house, an office, or a wedding story tied to Florence, Muscle Shoals, or the dam itself. It is a poor stand-in for Pickwick, which begins below the dam and continues into Mississippi and Tennessee, or for Wheeler, which begins above the head of this pool. Search “Wilson Lake, Muscle Shoals, Alabama” and do not pick a Wilson Lake in another county.

The Muscle Shoals pool is not always in the lake search. A Wilson Lake in Jefferson County or another state is not this dam. If the Tennessee River pool is missing, do not pick a different county.
