Coosa River
Weiss Lake map
Weiss Lake is an Alabama Power reservoir on the Coosa River in Cherokee County. The Encyclopedia of Alabama places Weiss Dam near Leesburg and says it began generating on June 5, 1961. The dam was named for Fernand C. Weiss, a former chief engineer of the company. It was the first dam in the upper-Coosa construction program of the late 1950s and 1960s.
A storage lake, not a run-of-river pool
Alabama Power’s shoreline guide lists Weiss at 30,200 acres and 447 miles of shoreline, with a full pool of 564 feet, and places the lake in Cherokee County. The company classifies Weiss as a storage project: the pool is drawn down in the fall to make room for winter and spring rain, then refilled toward summer. Lay, Mitchell, and Jordan, farther down the Coosa, are run-of-river pools and do not operate that way. Neely Henry is the next storage lake downstream.
Who a Weiss map is for
A Weiss map is for a house or a boat on the Cherokee County pool near Leesburg and Centre, not for Neely Henry, which starts below Weiss Dam and runs through Gadsden. Anglers who want the lake on a wall, and families giving a housewarming on this shore, can search “Weiss Lake, Alabama” and pick that reservoir. The print uses the shoreline you select. It does not add a fishing forecast.
