Lay Lake map
Lay Lake is an Alabama Power reservoir on the Coosa River, and it is the company’s first hydroelectric plant. Alabama Power’s own history of its dams says Lay Dam began operating on April 12, 1914. The Encyclopedia of Alabama places the dam in Chilton and Coosa counties near Clanton. The shoreline guide adds Shelby, St. Clair, and Talladega counties to the pool.
Run-of-river, below the storage lakes
The shoreline guide lists 12,000 acres, 289 miles of shoreline, and a full pool of 396 feet. Alabama Power classes Lay as run-of-river: it passes incoming flow downstream and does not carry the fall drawdown used at Weiss, Neely Henry, and Logan Martin. Mitchell Lake, finished in 1923, is the next dam downstream, at Duncan’s Riffle near Verbena. Lay is the upstream reason Mitchell’s work camp had electricity during construction.
