Claybank Creek
Lake Tholocco map
Lake Tholocco is a recreation lake in Dale County, on the Army post that trains Army aviators, near Ozark and Daleville. The U.S. Army says the Civilian Conservation Corps built the dam in the 1930s for a recreation lake of about 640 acres, used first by people around Dothan and later by soldiers at the post. The National Inventory of Dams records the stream as Claybank Creek and the county as Dale.
The name
The Army’s history of the lake says Mrs. C. Hutchison named it on June 6, 1940, and quotes a 1940 Southern Star article calling Tholocco an Indian name meaning “Big and Strong.” The post has been called both Fort Rucker and Fort Novosel; the lake name did not change with the post. It is not a TVA or Alabama Power reservoir, and it is not Lake Eufaula on the Chattahoochee. The Army article describes it as the recreation lake for the aviation post, which is the honest setting for a gift: someone stationed there, or a family that uses that shore.
Who a Lake Tholocco map is for
A Tholocco map is for that Dale County recreation lake, not for a Chattahoochee house at Eufaula and not for the Conecuh lakes in Covington County. The name is often mispronounced; the Army renders it Tuh-LOCK-oh. Search “Lake Tholocco, Alabama.” Because the lake is on an Army post, the map is a keepsake of the place, not a public-shoreline permit.
