Gantt Lake map
Gantt Lake is a PowerSouth Energy Cooperative reservoir on the Conecuh River in Covington County, near the community of Gantt and the city of Andalusia. PowerSouth says the plant was built on the site of a former grist mill by E.L. More’s River Falls Power Company and generated its first kilowatt in 1924. A 1929 flood destroyed the dam, and the dam standing now is the one rebuilt afterward.
One of two Conecuh plants
Point A Lake is the other PowerSouth reservoir on this river. PowerSouth’s shoreline papers describe the Gantt project in Covington County; marine charts also draw the pool into Crenshaw County. PowerSouth says both lakes were wrecked in the 1929 flood and rebuilt, and that both are run-of-river: the Conecuh and Patsiliga Creek pass through, and the level moves with the river rather than with a posted generation schedule. A 2004 Federal Energy Regulatory Commission notice describes the Gantt development as a reservoir of about 2,767 acres at a normal surface elevation of 198 feet. Point A’s pool in that same notice is about 700 acres at 170 feet. Those elevations are not used here to decide which dam is upstream, because local descriptions of the pair do not all agree.
