Little Cahaba River
Lake Purdy map
Lake Purdy is a Birmingham Water Works drinking-water reservoir on the Little Cahaba River in northern Shelby County. The utility says the original dam was built from 1906 to 1910 and raised 20 feet between 1927 and 1929, to a height of 73 feet and a length of 445 feet. It supplies raw water for a large part of the Birmingham area, including Homewood, Hoover, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia Hills.
A dam from 1910, still the city’s raw water
Birmingham Water Works describes Lake Purdy as the raw-water source for Shades Mountain Filter Plant and calls that plant the largest filtration plant in Alabama. The state conservation department lists the reservoir near Birmingham in the Cahaba basin. Inland Lake, in Blount County, is another Birmingham Water Works supply, on the Blackburn Fork of the Little Warrior, and it is a different map. Lake Purdy is not Lay Lake, even though both are south of Birmingham: Lay is Alabama Power’s Coosa reservoir.
