Coosa River

Mitchell Lake map

Mitchell Lake is an Alabama Power reservoir on the Coosa River in Chilton and Coosa counties. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says the dam was named for James Mitchell, a former company president, and that the Federal Power Commission’s first license to Alabama Power, granted in 1921, permitted a dam across the Coosa at an isolated shoal called Duncan’s Riffle, downstream from Lay Dam near Verbena.

Duncan’s Riffle

Construction began in July 1921. Generating units one, two, and three went into service in August 1923. The encyclopedia describes a concrete gravity dam 1,277 feet long and 106 feet high, a lake 14 miles long covering 5,850 acres, and a maximum depth at the dam of 90 feet. Alabama Power’s shoreline guide matches the 5,850 acres and lists 147 miles of shoreline, a full pool of 312 feet, and the same two counties. Mitchell is run-of-river, so the level does not follow the seasonal storage curve used upstream at Logan Martin.
