Tombigbee River
Gainesville Lake map
Gainesville Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Tombigbee River along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. USGS dates Gainesville Lock and Dam to 1978 and places the dam about two miles northeast of Gainesville, with a normal pool of 109 feet. The same report says the lock is a separate structure about 1.5 miles southeast of the dam, at the end of an approach canal.
A lock that is not in the dam
The Corps navigation list names that canal lock Howell Heflin Lock. ADEM describes the reservoir as a west Alabama riverine pool that begins in Pickens County and runs along the border of Greene and Sumter counties. Aliceville Lake is upstream, at Tom Bevill Lock near Pickensville. Demopolis Lake is downstream, at the confluence of the Black Warrior and the Tombigbee. The separated lock and dam is the detail that keeps Gainesville from being a copy of either neighbor.
Who a Gainesville map is for
This map is for the riverine pool along the Greene and Sumter line, not for a house on Aliceville Lake and not for Demopolis. Search “Gainesville Lake, Alabama.” Gainesville is also a town name, so choose the Tombigbee reservoir, not a city map. Howell Heflin Lock is the canal lock for this pool, not a separate lake.
